🌅 A Day Trip to the Grand Tour Circle with Sunset

Preah Khan Temple

Your adventure begins at 8:30 a.m. with a visit to Preah Khan, a magnificent 12th‑century temple built by King Jayavarman VII in honor of his father. Situated northeast of Angkor Thom and adjacent to the Jayatataka Baray, Preah Khan was once the center of a vast organization with nearly 100,000 officials and servants. Constructed on the site of Jayavarman VII’s victory over the Chams in 1191, its name—meaning “holy sword”—derives from the original Nagara Jayasri, or “holy city of victory.”

Neak Pean Temple

From Preah Khan, the journey continues to Neak Pean, a unique temple set on an artificial island in the Jayatataka Baray. Built during Jayavarman VII’s reign, this Mahayana Buddhist sanctuary is often described as the “Mebon” of the Preah Khan baray, symbolizing healing and balance.

Ta Som Temple

Next, explore Ta Som, a smaller yet enchanting temple constructed at the end of the 12th century. Dedicated to Jayavarman VII’s father, King Dharanindravarman II, Ta Som features a single shrine surrounded by laterite walls, offering a quiet and intimate glimpse into Khmer devotion.

East Mebon Temple

The tour then leads to the East Mebon, a 10th‑century temple built by King Rajendravarman. Once standing on an island in the now‑dry East Baray reservoir, this temple was dedicated to Shiva and honors the king’s parents. Its red sandstone and intricate carvings remain a testament to early Angkorian artistry.

Pre Rup Temple

Nearby lies Pre Rup, the state temple of King Rajendravarman, dedicated in 961. Constructed from brick, laterite, and sandstone, this temple mountain is thought to symbolize cremation rituals, with its name translating to “turn the body.”

Phnom Bakheng & Sunset

The day concludes at Phnom Bakheng, a 9th‑century temple mountain dedicated to Shiva. Perched atop a hill, it offers panoramic views of Angkor Wat and the surrounding jungle. Today, it is one of Siem Reap’s most popular sunset spots, where the fading light bathes the temples in golden hues—a truly unforgettable finale to your journey.
